The Project
This Southeast Michigan backyard was part of a newly built home with plenty of space for outdoor living, but the property still needed the finishing touches that would make it feel complete.
The homeowners were referred to GLC Landscaping & Pools by their parents, who had worked with the team previously. When it came time to turn their new backyard into a usable outdoor living space, they knew exactly who to call.
GLC designed and built a multi-level outdoor living space centered around connection, comfort, and everyday usability. The raised deck gave the home a strong starting point, but the yard still needed a defined gathering area where family and guests could comfortably spend time outside.
A large paver patio was installed directly below the elevated deck to create a clean transition from the home into the backyard. The patio layout extends outward into a dedicated fire pit lounge framed by built-in seat walls that naturally define the space without making it feel enclosed.
The gas fire pit serves as the centerpiece of the design, creating a functional gathering space for evenings outdoors while helping the patio feel anchored and complete. Warm-toned retaining wall materials and coordinated pavers tie the entire project together and complement the home’s exterior finishes.
Landscape beds with fresh plantings were added around the perimeter to soften the hardscape edges and help the new construction blend naturally into the property.
The finished backyard now feels organized, welcoming, and intentionally designed around how the homeowners actually spend time outside.
The Process
Like every GLC project, the transformation began with a clear design and construction plan.
The team evaluated the elevation changes between the deck and backyard, circulation throughout the space, and how to create multiple usable gathering zones without overcrowding the yard.
Once the design direction was finalized, GLC’s in-house team handled every phase of the installation, including site preparation, hardscape construction, retaining wall installation, fire pit integration, planting installation, and finishing details.
